Pre-Owned BMW SUVs: Everything You Need to Know

BMW is the biggest luxury car brand in the world and they make some absolutely stellar sporty SUVs. This article is about the superb and sporty BMW SUV and why we love them.

You can have it all — Cargo room, great performance, and athletic handling — in one of our pre-owned BMW SUVs.

What’s Better Than a BMW SUV?

What’s better than a BMW SUV?  A low-mileage used BMW SUV from Major World. Let someone else take the big luxury vehicle depreciation haircut. You can enjoy all of the sublime pleasures of driving your BMW X5, X3 or X7 with more money in your pocket.

BMW has been focused on driving enjoyment from just about day one. Many auto enthusiasts will tell you BMW invented the sporty sedan when it rolled out the iconic 2002 way back in 1968. The sporty sedan was a merging of two worlds: practical utility and sportscar exhilaration.

BMW X7, X5 and X3 Bring the Sporty SUV to Life

BMW has taken that concept to its logical conclusion and beyond by making some of the best sporty SUVs you can get today.  The X5 BMW SUV debuted in 1999 and took the automotive press and driving enthusiasts by storm. Back in the 1990s, most enthusiasts weren’t big fans of SUVs.

The sporty SUV wasn’t really a thing yet. Sure, a few powerful SUVs that could go fast in a straight line had come out, but most sportscar drivers saw SUVs as big, lumbering slow beasts that were always camping in the left lane and ruining their fun.

Flash forward to today — BMW has 12, yes TWELVE different sporty SUVs on offer. Almost all of them have evolved from BMWs existing sports sedan platforms, so they handle and ride beautifully with plenty of power on tap.

No matter who you are, the chances are good that Major World has a low-mileage used BMW SUV that you’re gonna love.

Here are our favorites:

BMW X3

BMW’s second-best-selling sporty SUV is the X3 and Major World has some beautiful, low-mileage used BMW X3’s in our stable of thoroughbreds right now, just waiting for you to test drive. Based on the consummate European sport-luxury compact 3-series sedan, there’s a lot to love here.

Nimble handling, easy to bob and weave with, and shoot through holes in the LIE traffic. The BMW X3 is an excellent weapon of choice for your commute, but it also offers the higher POV and visibility of an SUV, capable AWD for snow, and plenty of room for your golf clubs or to take your family on a little weekend trip.

Our pre-owned BMW X3 models include:

  • BMW X3 sDrive 28D, 30i, 35i
  • BMW X3 xDrive 28D, 30i, 35i
  • BMW X3 xDrive M40i

BMW X5

BMW is the world’s best-selling luxury automaker and the BMW X5 is their best-selling vehicle of any type in the U.S. That’s right, the X5 outsells everything else they make, including the ubiquitous 3-series sedan. That says a lot. But we’re not surprised. The BMW X5 is what you might call the “Goldilocks option”.

It sits right about the middle of the BMW SUV lineup. Not too small, not too big. It has enough size not to get bullied in Long Island traffic jams and to carry your stuff — but it’s not a whale that’s a pain in the ass to parallel park in the city. Win-win. It’s no wonder at all why used BMW X5s fly off the lot here at Major World.

Our pre-owned BMW X5 models include:

  • BMW X3 sDrive 28D, 30i, 35i
  • BMW X3 xDrive 28D, 30i, 35i
  • BMW X3 xDrive M40i

BMW X7

This is BMW’s flagship SUV. If you’re looking for BMW performance with room for a bigger family and all your toys, we’ve got you covered. In fact, at the time of writing with have two pre-owned BMW X7 XDRIVE 40i AWD SUVs in our inventory. The X7 is the champion of BMW SUVs with 3-row seating and a velvety-smooth 375-hp turbocharged inline-six. There’s also a 523-hp turbo V8 if you’re really in a hurry.

The BMW X7 XDRIVE 40i AWD is not quite Cadillac Escalade-sized, but it also corners and handles like no Escalade ever could. We think the X7 is a superb choice if you’re looking for a roomy, full-size luxury SUV that’s actually rewarding to drive and doesn’t feel like piloting an aircraft carrier. That’s the bottom line. It’s the 3-row luxury SUV for people who love to drive.

Our pre-owned BMW X7 models include:

  • BMW X7 xDrive 40i AWD
  • BMW X7 xDrive M60i AWD

Other BMW SUV Models You Should Know About

While the X5, X3 and X7 are the best-known BMW SUVs on the block, they are only 3 of the 12 BMW SUVs out there. They make up the bulk of the sales, sure, but the truth is that BMW is the master of making bespoke luxury SUV models to suit absolutely anyone to a T. They include some smaller, subcompact models that are even more affordable and fuel-efficient to sedan-like models and even electric SUVs.

Other BMW SUVs include:

  • BMW X1 SUV: The smallest, most affordable BMW SUV
  • BMW X2 Coupe SUV: A compact, fastback BMW SUV
  • BMW X4 SUV: Like the BMW X3, except with a sedan-like fastback style.
  • BMW X6 Coupe SUV: A sleeker, fastback version of the BMW X5
  • BMW XM SUV: An absolute beast SUV with up to 738 hp and a six-figure price.
  • BMW iX SUV:  BMW’s new all-electric SUV

What to Know About BMW SUV Names and Models

Wait, what’s the difference between sDrive and xDrive? What does that BMW M really mean? The modern nomenclature (naming system) for BMW SUVs can be a little confusing, especially now that they have so many models in the lineup — here’s a handy guide to help you make sense of it all.

  • sDrive:  sDrive models are two-wheel drive. Usually rear-wheel drive, but sometimes front-wheel drive on the smallest BMW SUVs, like the X1 and X2.

  • xDrive: xDrive is the BMW all-wheel drive system. These models have power going to all 4 wheels which not only helps in slippery situations but also improves handling in the dry.

  • X or iX or Xi: X means all-wheel drive generally, but BMW also uses the X to signify all it’s SUVs and crossovers. If you see X on a BMW car though, it’s got AWD.

  • i: “i” just stands for injection. It’s a vestige left over from the early days when some BMWs had carbureted engines to distinguish the fuel-injected models. They just kept it because…well, who knows?

  • D: D means diesel. BMW builds (or built) some truly magnificent diesel engines. Forget what you think you know about diesels. BMW diesels are powerful and quick with monstrous torque — but they’re also quiet and get amazing MPG. If you can find one, you owe it to yourself to at least test drive it.

  • 28i vs 30i vs 40i:  Once upon a time, these numbers represented the size of the engine, 28 meant a 2.8 liter inline six. Then came turbochargers. Now those numbers just represent how much horsepower you get. A bigger number means more power. Simple (kinda).

  • M-Performance, M-Series, M-Sport: The almighty BWM M used to be reserved only for the top-of-the-line, fastest versions of any BMW. That’s now called M-Performance. Then you have M-series, which has more performance than the regular model, but not as much as M-Performance. Finally, there is M-Sport, which is just a trim package that makes a BMW look sportier, but not any faster. Yeah, we know, it’s confusing.
