Mercedes-Benz R Class

This R Class was not your typical Mercedes Benz. Essentially a hybrid mixture of a minivan, a wagon and showcasing luxury car appointments, the R Class allowed those with a family to have some space without sacrificing sophistication. The vehicle offered six standard seats (a seventh seat was optional), it was spacious and it came with all Mercedes latest technological gadgets. For those seeking a versatile luxury vehicle that provides the capacity they need without requiring admission of purchasing a minivan, the Mercedes-Benz R-Class might make sense.
The Mercedes-Benz R-Class was a large crossover wagon produced between 2006-2012. True to form, Mercedes produced a wide variety of trims, options, engines and configurations. Seating was positioned 2+2+2, although buyers could opt to configure the vehicle in a 2+3+2 arrangement. The interior was noted to be roomy with high quality materials and accents. Although leather seats were never available on the R-Class, MB-Tex premium vinyl was standard and was surprisingly acceptable. The Mercedes-Benz R-Class debuted in 2006 in R350 and R500 trims, limited to six seats and all-wheel drive. All R-Class models had a seven-speed automatic transmission. For 2007, the R320 CDI and R63 AMG debuted. The latter high-performance-tuned R was a hyped up minivan, exploding onto the scene with a massive, naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8 that generated 503 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque. Mercedes estimated that the R63 accelerated from zero to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds – remember this is essentially a minivan! The R63 was also better behaved than the other R-Class offerings due to firmer suspension tuning, larger wheels and tires.
However, the public didn’t seem to take to the all that power in this class, and both the R500 and R63 AMG were discontinued for 2008. Never a manufacturer to sit still, in 2008 seven-passenger seating was introduced, and in 2009 the R320 Bluetec diesel engine replaced the R320 CDI. In 2011, Mercedes restyled the grille and headlights to look more like other Benz vehicles; new mirrors, wheels, taillights and bumpers completed the exterior makeover, while new headrests, new wood detailing and reimagined controls refreshed the look of the interior. 2012 marked the end of the R-Class, and that model year is considered desirable to used car buyers due to the new 3.5-liter gas V6 with increased power (302 hp) and improved fuel economy than the older engine.
Driving and R-Class has been likened to driving a train – large and heavy, but with the capability of controlling high speed with ease. During its short run, the R Class made its mark as a vehicle that broke molds and rethought paradigms, while succeeding in creating a high performance, high luxury way to transport the family.
